MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - Rutherford County Schools (RCS) has named Roscoe Sanders as the district's new Assistant Safety Director.

Sanders will work alongside Safe Schools Director Steve McClanahan, district leadership, school principals, and local community stakeholders to maintain campus security across the county. He succeeds former Assistant Safety Director Sean Martin, who recently accepted a position with a law enforcement training organization.

Sanders brings a extensive background in public safety and emergency response to the position. He served in the United States Marine Corps for 11 years and joined the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) as a deputy in 2006. In 2012, he became a School Resource Officer (SRO), serving most recently at Siegel High School.

"Our schools have remained safe because of a robust partnership with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, and with Mr. Sanders’ extensive background as a School Resource Officer at one of our comprehensive high schools, he will be an invaluable addition to our safety team," said RCS Director of Schools Dr. Jimmy Sullivan.

Sanders has completed multiple specialized training programs, including active shooter response, Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training, and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification through Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). He has also served as a law enforcement instructor.

"As our county continues to experience historic growth, ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of our dedicated county workforce and the community we serve is more critical than ever," Sanders said. "My vision for this department is to build a modern, data-driven, and proactive safety culture that moves beyond simple compliance."

McClanahan noted that Sanders distinguished himself during the interview process through his professional approach and proven track record with local students and staff.

Sanders officially begins his new role with Rutherford County Schools on Monday (September 14th).
