MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - Labor Day in Murfreesboro wrapped up with a tense situation that thankfully ended without injuries. A man who barricaded himself inside an apartment with two small children surrendered peacefully after a 90‑minute standoff Monday night (9/7/2026) at the Chariot Pointe Apartments on Northfield Boulevard.

Police say 31‑year‑old Rodney Parker Jr. became enraged when his girlfriend went to the gym without telling him. Around 6:25 p.m., he allegedly threatened to harm her and then locked himself inside the apartment with the children, refusing to come out. At one point, Parker reportedly placed the children on the balcony, prompting firefighters to use a ladder to safely bring them down.

With the children out of harm’s way, Murfreesboro Police brought in crisis negotiators, the Special Operations Unit, along with the department’s drone team to monitor the situation and communicate with Parker. Officers spent more than an hour urging him to surrender, and shortly before 9 p.m., he complied.

Parker was taken into custody at 8:47 p.m. without incident. He was booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on two counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, and investigators say additional charges may be forthcoming.

Police credited the coordinated response — negotiators, SOU officers, firefighters, and drone operators — for helping bring a volatile situation to a calm conclusion.
