MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - Tuesday’s (9/8/2026) lunch hour got a jolt on South Church Street when Murfreesboro Police, Murfreesboro Fire‑Rescue, and Rutherford County EMS rolled up to the sidewalk in front of the Murfreesboro Post Office. Dispatchers had just received reports of a pickup truck versus electric scooter crash around 12:18 PM, and the busy corridor quickly turned into a scene of flashing lights and slowed traffic.

Public Information Officer Larry Flowers told WGNS NewsRadio that the early investigation points to a simple but unfortunate moment of timing. As Flowers explained, “The preliminary investigation shows the driver of a pickup truck was attempting to turn into the parking lot when the rider of the scooter ran into the side of the truck.”

The scooter rider suffered only minor injuries and didn’t require a trip to the hospital, which brought a bit of relief to first responders who’ve seen far worse along this stretch of roadway.

And that stretch is no stranger to trouble. South Church Street—especially the area near the Post Office—has long been flagged as one of Murfreesboro’s more dangerous corridors. A four‑year traffic study logged 2,628 injury crashes, with frequent incidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists darting across without marked crosswalks. Residents say they witness “near crashes” almost daily, along with red‑light running and drivers pushing well past the posted speed limit.

Police used Tuesday’s incident as a reminder that electric scooters are not allowed on sidewalks under Tennessee law. Riders must stay on roadways and travel with the flow of traffic, keep as far right as safely possible, or use a bike lane when available. And just like bicyclists, scooter riders are expected to follow the same rules of the road.

Despite the commotion and the mid‑day slowdown, WGNS learned that no citations were issued in the lunchtime crash.
