NASHVILLE, TN (WGNS) - Nashville may soon greet visitors with a little more sparkle and a whole lot of Dolly. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority voted unanimously Friday (9/11/2026) to begin the formal process of renaming Nashville International Airport in honor of Dolly Parton. It was a unanimous 6–0 vote, and while no final name has been chosen, the authority made clear that the wheels are officially in motion.
Airport leaders described the renaming effort as a “multifaceted process,” meaning it won’t happen overnight. They’re now working with state officials, Dolly’s team, and other stakeholders to determine exactly how her name and legacy will be incorporated. More details are expected in the coming months, including next steps and how the change would be implemented.
The move follows an announcement from Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and BNA expressing their intent to honor Dolly with the airport’s name. Gov. Lee said he spoke with Dolly’s team this week, and they were touched by the idea and open to continuing the conversation. In true Dolly fashion, her team emphasized that she has always brought people together for good—and they hope this tribute will do the same.
Gov. Lee called Dolly “our state’s favorite daughter,” noting that her journey from the mountains of Sevier County to global stages embodies the Volunteer Spirit. He said it’s fitting that the place where Tennessee welcomes the world could soon carry her name, greeting travelers with her legacy of music, generosity, faith, and kindness.
Airport CEO Doug Kreulen echoed that sentiment, saying BNA has a responsibility to reflect the best of Nashville. He pointed to Dolly’s lifelong commitment to dignity, kindness, and opportunity—values the airport strives to uphold whether someone is boarding a private jet or taking their very first flight.
Dolly’s impact stretches far beyond entertainment. Through the Dollywood Foundation and her Imagination Library, she has gifted nearly 200 million free books to children around the world. And for Middle Tennessee folks, there’s an extra bit of nostalgia: Dolly performed at MTSU’s Murphy Center in 1986 alongside Kenny Rogers during his “Islands in the Stream” tour.
The Airport Authority will revisit the naming policy and Gov. Lee’s proposal at its September 17 meeting. For now, they’re thanking the Nashville community—and Dolly fans worldwide—for the overwhelming support.
If this moves forward, travelers may soon hear a new phrase over the loudspeaker: “Welcome to Dolly Parton International Airport.”
