Rutherford County Sheriff Barrett Issues Warning About “Cat’s Claw” Products, MGM-15,

MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is sounding the alarm about a product being sold under the name “Cat’s Claw,” urging parents and residents to take a closer look at what’s inside the package before anyone uses it. Sheriff Kenneth Barrett said the warning comes after state investigators noticed a troubling trend: some of these products may actually contain kratom‑derived compounds, including one called MGM‑15, without clearly stating that on the label.

That’s a serious concern in Tennessee, where kratom is now illegal in any form. The ban took effect July 1, 2026, and since then, law enforcement agencies across the state have already encountered cases involving alleged sales of the drug. In one recent incident, a gas‑station employee was charged after deputies said he was selling kratom out of the trunk of a vehicle.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says mislabeled products are making it harder for both buyers and retailers to know what they’re actually dealing with. TBI also reported that Knox County has seen 18 deaths involving kratom so far in 2026, with five of those cases directly tied to kratom alkaloids. That’s part of why state officials are pushing this message so strongly: just because a product is legally sold doesn’t mean you know what’s in it.

Here in Rutherford County, Sheriff Barrett is encouraging parents to talk openly with their kids and make sure they understand the risks. The Sheriff’s Office says its goal is simply to keep the community informed and safe, especially as new products continue to pop up in convenience stores and online.

TBI is urging both consumers and businesses to verify what they’re buying and selling. And for anyone who may be struggling with substance‑use issues—or knows someone who is—help is available. Tennesseans can call or text the Tennessee REDLINE at 800‑889‑9789 for confidential support.

Local officials say staying aware is the best first step. In a fast‑changing marketplace, knowing what you’re taking could save a life.
