MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - The Rutherford County Agricultural Extension Service at the Lane Agri‑Park is truly the happening place this time of year. If you’ve heard the Master Gardeners on WGNS and felt that spark of interest in planting, now’s the moment to act. The Master Gardeners Intern Class is gearing up for its spring session—a 14‑week course running February through April, with Tuesday morning classes from 9 until noon. The cost is $225, and interns complete certification by adding 40 volunteer hours and 8 hours of continuing education. Anyone wanting to dig deeper into gardening knowledge can request an application from Baileigh Snow at bsnow6@utk.edu.
And the Extension Service isn’t stopping at gardening. They’re also helping residents learn how to sew—yes, really sew. A hands‑on class on Monday, November 9, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., teaches participants how to operate a sewing machine, thread it, wind a bobbin, select stitches, guide fabric, and create a sampler pillow showing off their new skills. The cost is $25, and both adults and high‑school students can register online. Space is limited so everyone gets individual attention. Questions can go to Janette Walker at jwalk143@utk.edu or by calling 615‑898‑7710.
Lane Agri‑Park is also home to local 4‑H programs, and Rutherford County youth recently shined at the Central Region 4‑H Fashion Events held August 17 at the Tennessee State Fair in Lebanon. Two local students competed in the Clover Collection contest, which highlights clothing construction and sewing skills. Lydian F. earned a participation ribbon in the School Wear category for grades 4–7, and Parker took home second place in the Beginner Sewing category for grades 4 and 5. A big congratulations to both for representing Rutherford County so well.
Of course, October means Farmers Market season is still in full swing. Every Tuesday and Friday, shoppers can meet local farmers and pick up produce, cheese, honey, plants, meats, and more. This coming Tuesday, October 6, the market will hold a special evening session from 2 to 7 p.m.—the only evening market of the month. That night also features a Pumpkin Paint Night at 5 p.m. Buy a pumpkin, paint a pumpkin, and enjoy a fall evening at the market.
For those thinking about downsizing, the Extension Service has a helpful program coming up. FCS Agent Misty Layne‑Watkins will lead “Simplify Your Space, Simplify Your Life” on Monday, October 26 at 4 p.m. in the Lane Agri‑Park Community Center Classroom. It’s designed for anyone preparing for retirement, moving closer to family, or simply wanting a more manageable lifestyle. To register, email mlaynewa@utk.edu or call 615‑898‑7710.
Stay tuned to WGNS for more updates on the many programs offered at the Lane Agri‑Park—just down the street from Sam’s and next door to PAWS, where something helpful is always happening.
