MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - Middle Tennessee State University is once again earning national recognition by preparing the next generation of music industry professionals. MTSU’s Department of Recording Industry has been named one of Billboard’s Top Music Business Schools for the 12th consecutive year, reinforcing the university’s reputation as a leader in music business education.

The recognition appears in Billboard’s annual list of colleges and universities that are helping shape future careers in the music industry. This year’s spotlight highlights several new programs at MTSU’s Scott Borchetta College of Media and Entertainment, along with the department’s strong ties to Nashville and hands-on learning opportunities.

Among the newest additions are a graduate concentration in entertainment law, a Master of Fine Arts in Film and Television, and an undergraduate minor in live entertainment. Faculty members say the live entertainment minor is designed to help students learn the skills needed to organize and support concerts, festivals, and other major events.

Professor Gloria Green said the recognition reflects the department’s commitment to keeping pace with changes in the music business while providing students with a well-rounded education. She noted that the new live entertainment minor opens opportunities for students across campus who are interested in event production.

Real-world experience remains a cornerstone of the program. During the past academic year, more than 65 industry professionals visited MTSU as guest speakers, including Recording Industry Association of America CEO Mitch Glazier. Students also gained valuable experience working on live concert streams from the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival for Hulu and assisting with sound production for concerts, athletic events, and ESPN+ broadcasts.

Associate Professor Denise Shackelford said the program’s blend of classroom instruction and industry partnerships helps students turn their passion for music into meaningful careers. Professor Tammy Donham added that the recognition reflects the faculty’s ongoing efforts to ensure students graduate with both the knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed in an evolving industry.

Department Chair Michelle Conceison credited faculty and staff for continually strengthening the program and fostering innovation. For aspiring music business professionals, MTSU’s latest Billboard recognition serves as another reminder that Murfreesboro remains home to one of the nation’s most respected pathways into the music industry.
