MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - If you were near the central Murfreesboro area on Tuesday night (10/27/2026), chances are good - you heard emergency sirens that seemed to go on forever. The sound left some residents wondering what was happening? According to Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department officials, crews responded to a structure fire involving a shed at a residence on South Rutherford Boulevard. Firefighters quickly attacked the blaze and were able to keep the flames from spreading to the nearby home.

While the house was spared major damage, authorities said the intense heat generated by the fire melted portions of the adjacent home's exterior siding. Fortunately, officials reported there was no significant damage to the residence itself.

Fall Brings Seasonal Increase in Fire Risks

As Rutherford County moves into autumn, fire officials note that nighttime fires are not uncommon. The increase is typically tied to several seasonal factors rather than any single cause.

Cooler temperatures often lead residents to fire up furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, and space heaters that may have gone unused for months. Dust accumulation, worn electrical components, mechanical malfunctions, and improperly placed portable heaters can all create hazardous conditions.

This weekend is when we FALL BACK to "regular time". That brings the earlier arrival of darkness which also means more outdoor lighting, extension cords, and decorative displays. A damaged cord, overloaded outlet, or unattended flame can quickly turn into a dangerous situation.

The message is simple: a few minutes spent on fire prevention today can help prevent a late-night emergency tomorrow.
