The MTSU Department of Art will host Katy Seals, Assistant Professor of Printmaking at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma this September 30–October 3, 2013. She will conduct a visiting artist lecture and workshop at MTSU’s Todd Hall. In addition to her teaching, Seals has spent the past eight years organizing and attending a variety of international printmaking conferences and workshops.  She has worked as a part of Drive-By Press, an educational collaborative which traveled over 250,000 miles to teach people about printmaking and art.  She is a co-founder of the "Bump-It Mafia," a female printmaking collaborative that focuses on making work concerning women and advocates the benefits of being positive role models for younger female artists just starting out in their career.  

Well-versed in all print processes, Seals will come to MTSU for one week to conduct a workshop, provide an artist lecture, and show original fine prints from her collection.  She intends to spend her time on campus creating a commemorative work to country singer George Jones a.k.a. "Possum," who died earlier this year.  Focusing on screen printing and sculptural elements Seals’ body of work focuses on low-brow American culture, aiming to reveal the absurdity and paradoxical nature of Southern culture.  

Of her work Seals states, “The characters featured in my images … explore issues of excess and over-indulgence in American culture, [and] are part of a very specific narrative. I am greatly influenced by stories and cultural situations of the South and am particularly ?interested in the social roles assigned to Southern women.”
