As many have heard, Tennessee Chancellor Robert "Bob" Corlew of Rutherford County is retiring in the near future and is not running for office again. Some have asked what he plans to do in his retirement years. Chancellor Corlew has a goal of helping to lead the Lions Club International as Second Vice President.

The Murfreesboro Lions Club is having a fundraiser, "Beans for Bob", $10, on Saturday, April 19 from 11 AM to 4 PM at the Lions Clubhouse in Cannonsburgh Pioneer Village off of Broad Street.  There will be a white beans dinner and a silent auction to raise funds for the campaign of Past International Lions Director Bob Corlew to run for International Lions Second Vice-President in Toronto, Canada in July.  If he wins in this election, he will  advance to be the International Lions Club President in 2017 which will also be the 100th Anniversary of Lions Clubs International.

The Lions Club International is the largest world wide service organization and it would be an honor for Murfreesboro and Tennessee to be the home of this world leader who is respected world wide.

In October of last year, Chancellor Corlew announced that he will retire at the end of his current term and will not seek re-election. Corlew has been on the bench since 1984, and has served as Chancellor since 1990. Few Chancellors in America have served as long as Chancellor Corlew. During his tenure, a number of controversial cases have come before him.

“It has been my sincerest pleasure to serve the people during my thirty years on the bench,” Corlew said. “It has always been my intention to uphold the law, respect all those who come to Court, and to render decisions which are proper under the law and the facts of the cases.”

A primary election will be held in May, 2014 with a general election the following August, to fill the position, according to Brent L. Pierce, an attorney who is on Corlew’s staff. Barbara Penland-LaFevers, another attorney on Corlew’s staff said the Chancellor plans to complete his existing term which concludes in August, 2014.
