TSSAA Sports Policy For Practices In Heat

Although it's not officially here, heat indexes of 100+ degrees feel like the dog days of summer. The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association reminds area coaches about the organizations policy of sports practices on extremely hot days.

With the importance of this information, WGNS News has decided to give you the TSSAA's exact wording. In addition, if parents or students feel this policy is not being adhered to--they are encouraged to notify the organization at 615-889-6740.

With the extreme heat and projected heat index the next few days, we want to remind you to inform all coaches that the TSSAA Heat Index Policy applies anytime student-athletes are participating in a school supervised activity. Coaches must have a digital psychrometer or another means to check the heat index onsite. Proper modifications must be made based on the policy which can be found on our website at www.tssaa.org.
Regardless of what the activity is, all outdoor activity must be completely shut down if the heat index onsite is 105º or greater. Indoor workouts must stop if air conditioning is not available and the heat index indoors is 105º or greater. The index must be checked every 30 minutes.
