La Vergne Police Grab Auto Thief Suspect In 6-Minutes!

Dec 12, 2014 at 03:53 pm by Bryan Barrett

It took La Vergne Police six minutes to apprehend a suspect Friday morning who stole a truck parked at a home on Stones River Road.

The biggest shocker is that the owner saw the crime take place. The victim was warming his truck before driving his daughter to her elementary school. The truck's owner was walking toward the vehicle, and was able to attempt confronting the culprit. The thief was able to drive away after a brief physical scuffle witnessed by the child, who also tried to help.

Police were notified of the incident at 6:52 Friday morning (12/12/2014). The suspect crashed the truck at 73rd Avenue and Nir Shreibman Boulevard in La Vergne, and was apprehended within 6-minutes by La Vergne officers who were near the La Vergne Public Library. At that point the man fled the crash scene on foot.

Roosevelt Pitts, III is being charged with robbery, two charges of aggravated assault, vandalism, theft, leaving the scene of accident and driving without a license. The 23-year old male had been staying in La Vergne since Thanksgiving at a group facility following his release after serving time for a probation violation on an original charge of attempted homicide. The metro Nashville resident has an extensive criminal history that also includes theft and robbery.

"While we are pleased this suspect was caught quickly, it is important to remind our residents to only warm your car while you are in the car," said Lieutenant Michael Campbell. "Every community has predators that are looking to take advantage of other people. It is tempting to wait inside your home on a cold day while your vehicles heats up, but going this can put your property at risk."
