Charges are expected against a Rutherford County Adult Detention Center inmate after he allegedly assaulted his cellmate late Saturday. Detention Maj. Tommy Thompson says the 44-year-old injured inmate from La Vergne was treated by the medical staff at the center and by Emergency Medical Services paramedics en route to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital. He was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

Cellmate Guy Mitchell, 25, of Middle Tennessee Boulevard, was placed into segregation pending the investigation by the Sheriff's detectives and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Cpl. Ray Cobb says a deputy monitoring the pod asked for additional deputies after Mitchell threatened his cellmate. When deputies arrived, they found Mitchell standing in the door and the inmate on the floor. Nurses arrived within three minutes to begin treating him.

Paramedics took him to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital before he was flown to Vanderbilt. Detectives and TBI interviewed Mitchell who gave a statement. Detention investigator Sgt. Bobby Farley went to Vanderbilt to gather evidence.
