A 3-year-old toddler found unresponsive in a family’s swimming pool Sunday was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Rutherford County Sheriff’s detectives said. Later, the child was transferred to the Vanderbilt Childrens Hospital.

The toddler, who lives in Alabama, was visiting family members on Orchard Park Drive near Murfreesboro when a 5-year-old relative saw him in the pool and notified adults, said Rutherford County Sheriff’s Detective Lt. Todd Sparks.

Family members started CPR until sheriff’s Sgt. Monica Foseca took over. She turned the toddler over to paramedics who treated the toddler en route to Middle Tennessee Medical Center.

The toddler and other family members were swimming in the above ground pool earlier in the afternoon and went inside. A few minutes later, the toddler apparently slipped outside where he was discovered by the 5-year-old.

His parents, who were out-of-state, were traveling to Vanderbilt.

Several adults and children were at the home off Barfield Road.
