The City of La Vergne received official notice from Borders Group, Inc. that it is closing its facility on Waldenbooks Drive and laying off all of the 283 employees.  The closings will begin on or about August 15 and conclude no later than September 1, 2011.

According to the notification, “Any and all layoffs will be in connection with a permanent closing of the Tennessee facility and will affect all job classifications. No employees will be offered comparable jobs at any nearby company facility.”

The notice went on to explain that the company had actively and in good faith sought a capital infusion and/or a purchaser.  However, because the sale did not close a liquidation of Borders is required.

“We are deeply saddened that so many people are losing their jobs because of this closure,” said Mayor Senna Mosley. “We will do whatever we can in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce and the State Department of Labor and Workforce Development to help retrain, as well as finding these displaced workers new positions.”
