A 31-year old Murfreesboro man was killed in a crash and fire on 840. Emergency crews were called to the scene near Sulpher Springs Road at 11:15 Thursday morning. Tennessee Highway Patrol Lt. Jack Vaughn reports Robert Clay Maynard of Fairmont Drive was driving his 2000 Chevrolet Malibu westbound on state Route 840 when he drifted off the roadway. He was driving westbound and after overcorrecting, came back across both westbound lanes, left the roadway and struck a concrete culvert. This caused the vehicle to go airborne, landing on its roof and bursting into flames. Rutherford County Fire Chief Larry Farley says the vehicle was burned beyond recognition. However, Farley says Maynard died in the crash of the vehicle and not because of the ensuing fire. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, but Vaughn reports it would not have made a difference in this crash. Standard tests are being done for drugs and alcohol, but the accident report indicates neither was suspected. The Rutherford County Fire and Rescue was joined by the county's Special Operations Unit and Emergency Medical Services in responding to the crash.
