County working to self-correct athletic booster infractions with TSSAA regulations

Aug 06, 2011 at 08:08 am by Bryan Barrett

New efforts by local high school principals to police activities of sports booster clubs has brought-in five possible infractions. Rutherford County Schools Directors Harry Gill, Jr. asked those administrators in each school to determine whether or not the parent-run organizations had paid supplements to coaches over the past three-years.

Gill has notified the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association (TSSAA) that starting with the 2008-2009 football season, that five of this county's six Class 6A programs were involved. According to a memo sent by the local director to TSSAA Executive Director Bernard Childress, Blackman, Oakland, Riverdale, Smyrna and Siegel High School boosters had all given bonuses to coaches.

TSSAA rules allow high school coaches to be compensated only through funds from each school's governing body. Supplements and bonuses from parent and booster organizations are prohibited.

In this county's written correspendence with Childress, Rutherford County Schools Director Gill states,"There was no intent to violate the TSSAA constitution or bylaws. Our school administrators are now clearly aware of their responsibilities to oversee school support organizaqtions and their funds."

WGNS News will keep you informed of any responses from the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association.
