This past weekend a special artillery demonstration highlighted activities at the Stones River National Battlefield. One of the volunteers who was to have been a part of it was tragically killed in a terrorist attack last Thursday morning in Chattanooga.
Stones River National Battlefield's Chief of Operations Gib Backlund explained, "On weekends when there are major artillery demonstrations, National Battlefields in the region help each other. A group from Kennesaw, Georgia was scheduled to assist here in Murfreesboro this past weekend."
Marine Lance Cpl. Squire K. Wells of Cobb County, Georgia, was one of those killed in Chattanooga, and he was a volunteer with the Kennesaw group that was scheduled to be in Murfreesboro this past Saturday.
The Kennesaw group did not participate as a result of the death of one of their members, Skip Wells. Those groups who participated here in Murfreesboro, lined-up five cannons and had a moving tribute to each of the five military persons who were killed in nearby Chattanooga.
Soyutheast Regional National Battlefield's Chief of Interpretation Don Wollenhaupt, "A nice tribute to Kennesaw Mountain Volunteer Skip Wells by Stone River National Battlefield. Skip was one of the five military service men killed in the recent attack in Chattanooga last week."
