Proposed Merger: Murfreesboro Electric and MTEMC

(L-R photo ID) Murfreesboro Electric Department's (MED) Director of Engineering Philip Lim, Director of Marketing Amy Byers and General Manager Steve Sax share information about the possible sale of Murfreesboro Electric Department to Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation.

Byers noted that on August 16, 2015, Murfreesboro Electric Department will celebrate 76 years of service to Murfreesboro.

Sax mentioned that MED has installed approximately 25-miles of fiber-optic line in Murfreesboro. This has already helped with communication needs at MTSU. Chattanooga Electric's advances in technology enabled that city to attract the Volkswagen Plant.

MED is also working closely with electric powered vehicles (1 car and 2 trucks), and this research will help manufacturers with improved products in the future. This however is nothing new, MED used battery operated cars in the mid-1960's as well.

Sax noted that all employees are required to live within a certain distance of MED, so that they will be available in the event of an unexpected outage. This has proven extremely important when tornadoes, ice storms, high winds and other natural disasters hit. The line staff are able to get to the source of trouble more quickly, and their only focus is on Murfreesboro as opposed to spreading repair teams across several counties.
