This weekend the Live 4 Tay Foundation will host its 6th Annual Play 4 Tay Benefit Softball Tournament. There are 112 teams registered in age groups 8U - 18U, playing at McKnight, StarPlex and Barfield Parks in Murfreesboro and Veteran's Memorial Park in LaVergne. This is the foundation's largest fund raiser of the year and biggest tournament they have hosted. The tournament is scheduled to play Saturday and Sunday at all park locations, and games will be played on Monday at Starplex and McKnight Parks in Murfreesboro.
The tournament also holds a spirit jersey contest. Many of the participating teams wear special jerseys just for this tournament that display the gold ribbon, the number 4, "Play 4 Tay" or Taylor's number, 25. The winning team from each age group is determined by the number of "votes" each team collects for their team's jersey. The votes are monetary donations that the foundation earmarks for the Taylor Filorimo Scholarship Fund, which will begin taking applications for high school seniors and college students who have played softball and meet other qualifying criteria beginning in the Spring of 2017.
The Live 4 Tay Foundation was founded in 2012 after the passing of 16 year old Taylor Filorimo. Three tournaments were held to help support Taylor's family while she was being treated for renal cell carcinoma, a type of kidney cancer, and Taylor wanted the tournaments to continue so that other families could receive help. The foundation provides financial assistance grants to families who have children with cancer. Families can apply for assistance through an application on the foundation's website at live4tay.org.
The LaVergne Police and Fire Departments will also be hosting the 2nd Annual Live 4 Tay 5K on Friday evening at Veteran's Memorial Park in LaVergne. On site registration begins at 6:00 PM.
