As school begins this August, the Murfreesboro Police Department is reminding motorists to pay attention in school zones.

In order to protect both children and adults around schools, motorists are being reminded to: Slow down and obey posted speed limits. Watch for school zones. Be alert for children, buses, and other school-related traffic. Pay attention while driving. Don’t talk or text on a cell phone; avoid other distractions. Always obey crossing guards. Wear your seat belt and have your children properly restrained.

School zone safety is not just about speeding, however. Distracted driving accounts for a large percentage of the dangerous situations we see every day. People talking on cell phones and texting are as big a concern as speeding.

Remember: Be patient, follow the directions of the crossing guard or police officer, slow down, and focus on your main goal – to arrive safely.

Officers will be out in full force in marked vehicles, unmarked vehicles, and on motorcycles throughout the school year enforcing all traffic laws.
