Rutherford Co. Sheriff's Office Helps Fight Illegal Gold Buyers

Sep 01, 2011 at 06:29 am by Bryan Barrett

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is cracking down on finding folks who are stealing gold and then selling it to gold stores in the area. Well, they are at least cracking down on one aspect of the scenario.

The Sheriff’s Office recently went undercover to find out which stores were following the letter of the law when buying gold. What they found was that some stores were not keeping a log of names of the people who sold them gold. A log is required by state law. It is the same state law that requires pawn shops to keep a log of who they buy from.

At one store, the informant who sold gold was not asked for ID. That is also a violation of the law. The Sheriff’s Office says that if the gold buying stores would follow the law, then it would restrict the thieves and force them to show their ID when selling the gold jewelry they steal. The Sheriff’s Office plans to issue citations to stores that don’t follow the laws.
