Two mothers were indicted this week after their infants were born with drugs in their bodies, a Rutherford County Sheriff’s detective said.

Mother Candy Donnell, 27, of Kittrell-Halls Hill Pike was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, said investigating Detective Phil Brooks.

“Donnell’s baby was addicted to methadone and amphetamines,” Brooks said.

Mother Amelia Potts, 25, of North Lamar Road, was charged with assault and reckless endangerment.

Potts’ baby showed marijuana in its system, Brooks said.

“They’ve been using drugs for awhile,” Brooks said of the mothers.

Their babies were expected to recover, the detective said, adding both infants were undergoing medical care. Both mothers have other children.

Brooks presented his cases to Rutherford County grand jurors who issued sealed indictments against both mothers this month. They are expected to receive copies of the indictments Monday in Circuit Court.

Several mothers have been charged this year with similar crimes in Rutherford County.

“We’re seeing it more and more,” Brooks said.
