MTSU football offensive coordinator Willie Simmons has resigned, effective immediately. He sited personal reasons in a press release from MTSU Friday night.
An arrest report from the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department, which is sent to media daily, stated he was arrested Wednesday on aggravated assault charges. No other information was available.
Athletic Director Chris Massaro said he supports the decision and feels the resignation "is the best for all parties involved." Coach Rick Stockstill, who recruited Simmons in 1997 at Clemson, said "he is like a son to me and I will continue to support him thru this difficult time in his life.”
In the release from the university, Simmons said he needed to focus on personal matters and allow Coach Stockstill begin the process of moving the team forward. The Blue Raiders will be back in action against at Florida Atlantic next Saturday.
