Murfreesboro is dipping into the retirement ranks to oversee its Human Resources Department until it can find a replacement for former director Glen Godwin.
City Manager Rob Lyons announced Friday the appointment of Sherry Carpenter, former city treasurer and personnel director, as interim HR director.
Carpenter, who retired in 2009, will assist in a transition as the city conducts a national search for an HR director, according to spokesman Mike Browning.
The move comes a week after Godwin was fired amid a pay and benefits study and after an outside law firm was hired to interview HR personnel about his management.
Lyons has declined comment on the reasons for Godwin's dismissal, but Mayor Shane McFarland said it had to do with management, not with any illegal actions or manipulation of the pay study.
Godwin's attorney Jay Jackson accused City Councilwoman Madelyn Scales of intervening for HR employees and trying to have Godwin change pay scales. Scales says that isn't true, and City Attorney Craig Tindall says Godwin's allegations are false.
