Women's Tennis: Strong singles day for Middle Tennessee women’s tennis Saturday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee women’s tennis team posted six singles wins in seven tries to post solid overall results during day two action Saturday of the June Stewart Invitational at Vanderbilt’s Currey Tennis Center in Nashville.

The half-dozen singles victories place each Blue Raider into their respective flight championship matches Sunday, while five of the six came against foes from Miami (Ohio).

In the Brad Roby semifinals, junior Yuiri Nomoto handed the Redhawks’ Rickie Honiball a 6-3, 6-1 loss, while sophomoreFlavia Nagayama advanced to the Jason Valentine final with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Miami (Ohio)’s Christine Guerrazzi.

A pair of Middle Tennessee players will match up in the Lise Gregory championship contest after winning their respective semifinal contest. Junior Lexi Brand knocked off Miami (Ohio)’s Ramona Costea 6-4, 6-2 and senior Marietta Bigus posted a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over the Redhawks’ Katherine Castro.

A similar situation will take place in the Ashley Crosby bracket with seniors Taylor Coffey and Alex Dachos squaring off for the flight title Sunday. Coffey tallied a 6-3, 6-1 win over UNC Asheville’s Jenna Dodge, while Dachos registered a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Miami (Ohio)’s Jessica Parr.

In doubles action, the Blue Raiders managed just one victory in their three matches, unfortunately, it came against their own teammates. In the championship of the Lori Alexander flight, Bigus and Brand defeated Coffey and Dachos, 8-2.

The last singles matches will all take place Sunday, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
