Focus on MURFREESBORO PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT

  • Susan Hicks tells about PERFORM MURFREESBORO, the city's youth theatre group. Their next production is "Anne of Gren Gables" Fri. (Aug. 25) 7PM, Sat and Sun. (Aug. 26-27) 2PM and 7PM. Tickets are $7.50 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 and younger. The production is in the Washington Theatre at the Patterson Community Center (521 Mercury Blvd.).   • Melinda Tate tells about the 17th ANNUAL GREENWAY ARTS FESTIVAL on Sat. (Sept. 16, 2017) 10AM-4PM along the Greenway as it crosses the Old Fort Park (near Kid's Castle). There will be jurried artists selling their creations, kid's art activities, food trucks, vendors, and great opportunity to purchase Christmas gifts as well.
  • Sign-up for the GREENWAY 100 Sept. 1-30 only at SportsCom. The fee is $10. You have a full-year to walk 100 miles on the Greenway.
  • RACHEL SINGER promoted to Recreation Superintendent at Murfreesboro Parks & Recreation Department.
  • MPRD and TWRA are working to move the geese and ducks from the Gateway Island so that runners and walkers can enjoy the paved path around the water without concern for large amounts bird waste. Government officials are using paint guns and air horns to humanely encourage the large birds to move on.
  • 3rd ANNUAL HUMMINGBIRD FESTIVAL Sat. (Sept. 2, 2017) at Barfield Crescent Park's Wilderness Station. There will be a "Master Bander" there from 8AM-10AM. She will be banding hummingbirds and checking to see how many of the 30 banded birds returned this year. There will also be talks, vendors and food trucks 10AM-4PM.
  • Assistant Director Nate Williams and Melinda Tate tell about the expansion of the Greenway System from Cason Trail to Barfield Crescent Park. Work on that construction is about to begin. This is a 3-4 mile stretch of greenway.
