Community Events on 9/11 in Murfreesboro

Event on the MTSU Campus:

The public is invited to join the MTSU community for the university's third 9/11 Observance at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at the Veterans Memorial site outside the Tom H. Jackson Building, 628 Alma Mater Drive.

Led by cadets in the program, MTSU's Department of Military Science will hold the event to commemorate the 16th anniversary of a series of four coordinated terrorist suicide attacks by the Islamic group al-Qaida on U.S. landmarks, which occurred Sept. 11, 2001.

In the event of rain or inclement weather, the event will move into Cantrell Hall in the Tom H. Jackson Building.

MTSU Guest speakers will include:

โ€ข Sidney A. McPhee, the 10th MTSU president, who assumed leadership in 2001.

โ€ข Tammy Bass, a Gold Star mother. Her son, U.S. Army Cpl. David Bass, was killed in action.

โ€ข Keith M. Huber, senior adviser for veterans and leadership initiatives at the MTSU. Huber, who joined MTSU in January 2015, spent nearly 40 years in the military, retiring as a U.S. Army lieutenant general.

Special event at the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office on September 11th:

Veterans and community residents will remember the emergency responders and citizens who died during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorists' attacks at noon, Monday, Sept. 11 at the Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh invited citizens to join emergency responders in memorializing the sacrifices so many Americans made that day.

Sheriff Fitzhugh said, "This solemn ceremony will remember the lives of the firefighters, paramedics and law enforcement officers who gave their own lives to save innocent people. We will also remember the citizens who died that day and the military that have lost their lives since then protecting America."

Keynote speaker will be Police Chief John Maggard, Chief with the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System.

Maggard served as a military police officer in the U.S. Army from 1983-1996 in Texas and Colorado, the Republic of Panama and Korea. Since then, he served in different positions at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center, Acting Chief of Police and Security Service at Palo Alto Health Care System and Chief, Police Service at the Ann Arbor Health System.

Other events include a multi-agency Honor Guard and the raising of the POW Flag by Rolling Thunder.

WGNS' Bart Walker will serve as emcee of this memorial tribute.
