The inaugural Charity Chopped In The 'Boro raised $24,000 to help local residents receive better access to food, clothing and shelter.

The cooking competition, which was held on Sept. 14 at CJ's Restaurant and Catering, featured three different courses prepared by local celebrities with the help of chefs to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee, Amelia's Closet and Murfreesboro Rescue Mission.

The event featured a red carpet photo opportunity upon arrival, a buffet provided by CJ's, a silent auction, local musicians and a special appearance by country singer Craig Campbell. More than 150 people were in attendance.

"We were so successful in our first year, that we have decided to make this an annual tradition in Murfreesboro," said event organizer Shannon Wheeler. "Charity Chopped will be held every year on the second Thursday in September. Mark your calendars for Sept. 13, 2018."

Kristin Demos and Curious Kitchen co-owner Rachel Spensatelli, who competed on Team Food on behalf of Second Harvest, won the competition. The winners earned an additional $5,000 for their cause, provided by sponsor Ole South.

"1 in 5 children go hungry in our community," Spensatelli said. "So we're really happy to be here and privileged to be working with Second Harvest Food Bank." Realtor John Jones and Mitchell Murphree of Five Senses competed on Team Clothing on behalf of Amelia's Closet. Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland and Chef Alex Belew competed on team Team Shelter on behalf of Murfreesboro Rescue Mission.

Each team prepared appetizers, entrees and desserts using mystery ingredients, much like on the popular TV show Chopped.

The competition was emceed by Kelli Beam and judged by John Floyd, Shane Reeves, Rachel Holder, Lisa Spencer and Christy Hackinson. Amelia's Closet provides women dignity and hope in their recovery journey by giving them a second chance at making a great first impression.

Murfreesboro Rescue Mission plans to assist homeless men, women and children in Murfreesboro, offering emergency shelter, a life recovery program, and halfway housing.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee's mission is to feed hungry people and work to solve hunger issues.
