During the early years of World War II in the Pacific theatre, young American airmen flew the longest and most perilous bombing missions of the war.
The book release event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by The City of Murfreesboro and the Aerospace Department of MTSU.
They faced determined Japanese fighters without fighter escort, relentless anti-aircraft fire with no deviations from target, and thousands of miles of over-water flying with no alternative landing sites.
Phil Scearce, author of Finish Forty and Home: the Untold WWII Story of B-24’s in the Pacific, a novel about the heroic exploits of his father and the men and missions of the 11th Bomber Group, will be on hand in the Donald McDonald Hangar at Murfreesboro Municipal Airport at 1:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon November 12th.
The book is about the men and the missions of the 11th Bomb Group during WWII. Phil's dad and his crew are featured in the book as Phil describes their movements between tiny islands, combat missions and day-to-day living.
Scearce is particularly interested in inviting veterans, since he hears from veterans or their families almost daily.
The letters, pictures, and remembrances they share are deeply moving, and it is preserving these stories that motivated Phil to write the book.
Phil's book won the Literary Excellence award for manuscripts at the Mayborn Non-Fiction Literary Conference in 2010, and was published by the University of North Texas Press earlier this year.
The novel is in its second printing and has been made into an audiobook by Tantor Media. It is also available as an eBook through Google and Kobo. The History Book Club has picked it up as one of its selections, as well.
