Annual Spelling Bee TONIGHT!

Nov 15, 2011 at 11:42 am by bryan

There won’t be spell-check on the stage tonight at Patterson Park Community Center, when thirteen local celebrities battle for a spelling bee championship.

The fifth Read To Succeed Celebrity Bee will be an "all-star" event, with past Bee winners and contestants vying for the top spot.

Tickets to the Bee and Celebrity “Buzz” Dinner by Five Senses tonight are still available for $50 per person. Purchase your tickets online at celebritybee.readtosucceed.org. The Five Senses Celebrity “Buzz” Dinner starts at 6 p.m., with the Bee beginning at 7 p.m.

Rutherford County Mayor Ernest Burgess, Smyrna Mayor Tony Dover, Eagleville Mayor Sam Tune and La Vergne Mayor Senna Mosley are among those spelling, all risking possible humiliation in the name of promoting literacy.

Mayor Burgess says that he thinks reading is the fundamental foundation for learning. Mayor Dover notes that literacy is a core skill “needed to survive and thrive in today’s world.” It’s a cause they all deem vitally important.

“The Bee is good fun, you get a sense of community, and you never know what the spellers are going to say,” says Mary Esther Reed, owner of The Learning Circle and Read To Succeed Executive Board member. “It’s more than just a spelling bee. It’s such a fun night for raising money for literacy in Rutherford county and it only takes one ticket to make a difference.”

In honor of Murfreesboro’s Bicentennial year-long celebration, President Madison, Colonel Hardy Murfree, Thomas Rucker and Captain William Lytle—the major players in Murfreesboro’s founding—will even make an appearance in a Pre-Bee spell-off (or, at least, their doppelgangers will).  This special feature will not only highlight Murfreesboro’s year-long Bicentennial celebration, it will add to what makes the Celebrity Bee such a great night—fun, laughs, and support of a local cause.

Also taking the stage is MTSU Baseball Coach Steve Peterson, community volunteer Leslie Akins, Kristin Demos, Criminal Justice Consultant Gayle Ray, community volunteer Gloria LaRoche, Murfreesboro City Councilman Toby Gilley, Daily News Journal columnist Barb Ford, Pastor Vincent Windrow, and Five Senses Owner and Chef Mitchell Murphree.
