(MURFREESBORO) The pilot whose plane crashed just beyond the Murfreesboro Airport's runway barrier fence around noon on Sunday (10/28/2018) has been identified as Robert Kinney of Hendersonville.

Residents in the Northfield Lodge Apartments describe hearing an engine stall and then a thud that shook the complex.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are attempting to determine why the engine on the Beechcraft Bonanza single-engine plane stalled.

Federal authorities are looking through the debris from the wreckage and trying to piece together evidence in the case.

Mr.Kinney survived the crash and reportedly commented at the scene that his engine failed and the plane cleared the barrier fence beside the runway and landed in the overgrown thicket of trees and bushes.

An aircraft recovery team spent several hours on Monday removing the aircraft from the 50-foot thicket of dense trees and privet that acts as a buffer from the apartments and the Murfreesboro Airport.

Despite the heavy undergrowth, the team was able to get their trucks close to the remains of the aircraft and remove it without needing special equipment.

Again, the 79-year old pilot involved in Sunday's airplane crash at the Murfreesboro Airport was Robert Kinney of Hendersonville. He was the only person in the single-engine aircraft and did not suffer life threatening injuries.
