MTSU Encouraging Alumni to Get Behind Bridge over Broad Naming

We told you recently about the efforts to name the Bridge Over Broad either "True Blue Bridge" or "Blue Raider Bridge." Now, MTSU officials are asking supporters and alumni to get behind the idea.

Rutherford County Mayor Bill Ketron told the Rutherford County Commission Steering Legislative and Governmental Committee last month that the state has the authority to name the bridge but the commission can suggest, by resolution, a name. The committee is expected to pick from the two names and present it to the full commission in December.

In an email to alumni, MTSU is asking supporters to contact their county commissioner and voice their support for the naming.

The bridge naming will likely be voted on by the state legislature in January as part of an omnibus bill, which has many items such as this within it.

Soon after it's opening, the Murfreesboro City Council sought the public's input on naming the Bridge over Broad.

But last week, before this Monday's County Commission Steering Legislative and Governmental Committee meeting, Rutherford County Mayor Bill Ketron told NewsRadio WGNS it's the state who has the authority to name it.

That's because it's a state bridge for a state road, built by the state. The county commission can, however, suggest by resolution, a name.

Mayor Ketron presented to the committee this week naming it "True Blue Bridge" or "Blue Raider Bridge." The mayor also hopes to add blue LED lighting.

It was well received by the committee, who would have to decide on a name and have it come before the full County Commission before a resolution could be sent to the state.

Ketron hopes that can be done by December, since the next state legislative session begins in January. He says it would likely be part of a omnibus bill.

The nearly 23-million dollar bridge opened up 11-months ago.
