Is a "Virtual School" in your child's future?

Dec 26, 2011 at 09:59 am by Bryan Barrett

Murfreesboro City School Director Linda Gilbert was on Monday's WGNS' Action Line, and said that the 107th Tennessee General Assembly will be strudying virtual schools when they convene January 10, 2012. When asked if that was for high school level students, Dr. Gilbert commented . . .

She said legislators are also studying whether or not to bring back the election of school superintendants, more focus on charter schools and the use of vouchers to determine where parents with their tax dollars to go to support education.

Supply What Job Force Needs

Dr. Gilbert also noted that 54 per cent of the jobs that are available today require middle skill training. She commented, " We must supply what the work force needs". Dr. Gilbert reported that new data shows 40 per cent of BS degree holders are in non-related jobs.

Bad Students?

When asked her feelings on placing what a listener described as "bad students" in one school, the Murfreesboro City School director responded strongly, "I don't think students are bad when they enter, kindergarten, elementary school or even high school. They reflect what we have taught them." Basically, she concluded that children must be taught good ethics as well as given the academic tools to be successful in life.

TCAP Scores

The Tennessee Department of Education TCAP scores for Spring, 2011 show Williamson County and Franklin City schools ranked first and second, while Rutherford County and Murfreesboro City were third and fourth in that order.
