(MUFREESBORO) Excessive speed may have been a contributing factor in a serious two vehicle crash that occurred just after 8:00 o'clock Saturday night (4/11/2020).
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2010 Toyota Camry driven by Amilcar Castro Lopez was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound (toward Murfreesboro) on S. Church Street (highway 231-S or Shelbyville Highway) when he crashed into the rear of a 2010 Ford Flex. That's near Highfield Drive, between Camino Real and Walmart.
Lopez's car left the roadway, hit a telephone pole, and trapped him inside.
Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department crews used a hydraulic spreader to free him.
The LifeFlight helicopter flew the 20-year old Shelbyville to Vanderbilt Medical Center. Lopez is currently in stable condition.
The two people in the Ford Flex had minor injuries and were taken to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital by Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services.
Because of the seriousness of the crash, the investigation is being conducted by the Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT).
Charges against Lopez are pending.
