In partnership with the Tennessee Department of Human Services, one June 1 the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County will open their Murfreesboro, Smyrna, and Shelbyville locations to children of essential employees at no cost during the COVID-19 pandemic state of emergency. The program will support families that are serving the state in essential workforce positions.
"We are proud to provide childcare for essential workers in Rutherford County," said Sheryl Chesnutt, Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County. "I am grateful we can provide a safe and positive place for these children, and feel privileged we can serve those on our frontlines."

Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County (BGCRC) will be providing innovative, high quality programs with focuses on academic success, healthy lifestyles, and good character and citizenship. To do this, they have partnered with several organizations in Rutherford County.
With COVID-19 abruptly halting traditional in-classroom instruction earlier this spring, experts fear the summer learning loss will dramatically worsen and make it harder for students to reengage in the 2020-2021 school year.
In partnership with the Bill and Crissy Haslam Foundation, and through the Tennessee Tutoring Corps, BGCRC will connect qualified college students with members through 6th grade to provide tutoring in key subjects, including math and reading.
In addition, the Child Development and Family Studies Department at MTSU will be working with BGCRC by providing additional educational support through student internships.
First Shot is providing STEM Academy for first, second, and third graders at the Boys & Girls Club. The STEM Academy provides an environment for students to cultivate knowledge through exposure and awareness to diverse technologies. Among the skills members will learn is drone coding and writing lines of code to program technology.
