La Vergne High School principal Dirk Ash announced his retirement Friday.

On Twitter, the 42-year educator said "turned in my retirement papers today. 42 years in education! 20 years as a teacher/coach and 22 years administration. Ready for what's next? Stay tuned."

Rutherford County Schools responded with a social media post of their own, thanking Ash for his commitment to students. "He served in a variety of positions including teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal of La Vergne Middle and La Vergne High. He always sought to provide opportunities for students and should be commended for 40+ years of service.
