June Spike in COVID-19 Cases

There has been an uptick in some of the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in Tennessee.

State Representative Dr. Bryan Terry says with society opening back up, an uptick was expected. He says a few weeks ago, Vanderbilt projected the hospitalizations to rise and hover around 300.

Dr. Terry says whether this trend is secondary to increased community activity, lockdown fatigue, protests or a combination of all is up for discussion. Regardless, he says, the numbers are worth watching.

"Also, for perspective, when Vanderbilt first discussed their model, they projected 13% of Tennesseans would acquire COVID-19 without lockdown measures. They, also, put out a paper stating that it would require 60-75% of society to acquire COVID-19 for herd immunity. Obviously, if only 13% gets infected, there won't be a herd immunity."

"Based on those projections, around 880,000 Tennesseans would be expected to contract COVID-19. Tennessee has only performed 535,000 tests with 28,340 positive."
