From a steampunk contest to a party celebrating the release of the movie based on the popular Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the LaVergne Public Library has something for all ages in March.
Jumping on the popular “steampunk” movement, the library is hosting a Steampunk Art Contest. The steampunk look can be described as the Victorian age meets the industrial revolution in technology design. For example, a modern cell phone might have leather edges with cogs and swirls decorating the body.
“We think this contest is a great opportunity for all of our patrons to show off their imaginations, whether they like reading steampunk, tinkering, sewing, or inventing,” said Library Director Teresa Wilberscheid. “I think once people start exploring the world of steampunk a little, there will be no end to the things they come up with. We have a few staff members here who had never heard of it before I purchased the book that inspired this contest and are now so excited about the contest and the entries we hope to see – one of them actually came up with the idea to do this.”
The contest has three divisions, by age, including a category for children, teens, and adults. Two or three dimensional entries can be submitted through March 31st at the Library, located at5063 Murfreesboro Road. One winner from each division will be selected by members of the Library Board to receive a $20 Barnes & Noble gift card.
Steampunk Art Contest rules and additional information can be found on the city web page at www.lavergnetn.gov. Click on the Library link and go to the scheduled events page.
On Saturday, March 24 at 2:00pm, the Library is also hosting a “Hunger Games Party” with its teen and young adult program. The staff will have snacks and have survival games planned. Additionally, the winner of a $25 Malco-Roxy gift card will be announced for their expertise in playing the Hunger Games Trivia Contest.
