The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is in need of $405,000 in funding due to an increase in fuel expense, costs related to feeding inmates and new communications equipment. Right now the jail is housing approximately 270-inmates that are supposed to be in a state facility but are not due to state overcrowding. The Public Safety Committee on Monday agreed to the county using reserve funds to pay for an additional $150,000 in added fuel costs. The committee also gave the green light to $200,000 to pay for increased food prices to serve the overpopulated jail. The committee told Sheriff Robert Arnold to search for ways to cut spending and save money to cover the costs of communications which total an additional $55,000. The budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year will come to an end on June 30th. The Sheriff’s additional spending will be reviewed on April 5th and put before the full commission for a vote on April 12th.
