Most people have bottles still sitting in medicine cabinets containing old prescriptions drugs – drugs that are no longer needed or used.  Disposing of the medication improperly could contaminate the public water supply, so the city ofLaVergneis working with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to take back unwanted or unused prescription drugs.

The national drug take-back initiative is scheduled Saturday, April 28 at LaVergne City Hall between 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Pills, liquid medicines, and creams will be accepted by DEA officials, in partnership with the LaVergne Police Department.

Last year, more than 377,000 pounds of prescriptions were turned in at over 5,000 sites nationwide, with 498 tons of medication removed from circulation within the last three years.

“Handing over old prescriptions for safe disposal can help reduce prescription abuse,” said Mayor Senna Mosley.  “Also participation in this event will keep old medications out of our water supply and out of our landfills.”

Other collection sites include the Smyrna Police Department at400 East Enon Springs Roadin Smyrnaand the Middle Tennessee Medical Centerat 1700 Medical Center Parkway in Murfreesboro. Hours may vary at other site locations.
