Proper Retirement of "Old Glory"

The Hardy Murfree Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met at Carriage Lane Inn Thursday evening (6/14/2012). Since it was "Flag Day", they asked WGNS' Bart Walker to tell about the radio station's flag retirement program.

He stressed, "In 1777 when the Second Continental Congress voted that the American Flag be the symbol of our country, that what we call Old Glory is a visible reminder of our love for country and honor for those who have served and protected the freedoms we all enjoy."

Walker said that first impression count and when a person flies a tattered flag, it sends a bad image of others of what you think about America. He told how the radio station encourages listeners to bring their old flags to WGNS and groups of scouts and veterans properly and respectfully dispose of the flag.

He commented, "The most personal way to retire a tattered American flag would be to have a ceremony where you burn it yourself, and then bury the remains in the backyard. Since most persons don't do that, this is why WGNS started the service for our community."

DAR Honored As Volunteer

DAR member Patsy Ann McElroy Morris was honored for her 15-years service with the Colonel Hardy Murfree Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and for having served as Regent with that proud organization. She received the Toot's Volunteer of Week honor for her dedication to educating youth through the DAR's "literacy outreach". Further proof is found with all of the times you read to children and dress in costume to help make history come alive.
