A few concerned residents have contacted the Rutherford County Schools after hearing a rumor that the schools received a list of demands for Musilm students to follow from the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro. James Evans with the school district says that no such list or letter was received.

Rutherford County Schools released the following statement

First, the school district is not aware of anyone receiving any written communication directly from the Islamic Center. However, several principals have reported they received an e-mail from a person named Eric Bell that accuses the school district of receiving and disseminating information from the Islamic Center. Mr. Bell’s email does include an attached informational document from the Islamic Center. But again, this document was not received directly from the Islamic Center; it came from Mr. Bell.

However, the school district routinely receives informational literature about religions from various groups, including Christian, Jewish and legal organizations. Students of all religions are allowed to exercise their first amendment rights by practicing religious activities or participating in religious clubs at school as long as those activities are student-initiated.

Updated statement from the schools:

Eric Bell has responded with an email he says was sent to staff attorney Angel McCloud four years ago in September 2008 from the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro. The e-mail contained an educational flyer about muslim beliefs and practices as they pertain to muslim students . However, the email does not contain a list of demands or mandates, which has been alleged. Ms. McCloud receives this type of information from various religious and legal groups from time-to-time and does not specifically recall the e-mail from 2008 because of the amount of time that has passed.
