There will be a new Rutherford County Property Assessor, Road Superintendent and school board members after Thursday's election.

Democrat Rob Mitchell beat Republican incumbent Bill Boner 57-percent to 43-percent after a very contentious race for property assessor.

Greg Brooks beat two challengers to become the new Road Superintendent. The Republican took 53-percent of the vote to Democrat B.J. Smotherman's 34-percent. Independent Del Corbitt received 13-percent of the vote.

A close race for School Board Zone 3, with only 68 votes determining the winner. Helen Blankenship is the newest school board member, edging Tim Holden. Blankenship received 34-percent of the vote to Holden's 32-percent. Incumbent School Board Zone 2 member Grant Kelley was defeated by challenger Coy Young by a total of 319 votes. Young received 56-percent of the vote to Kelley's 44-percent. Terry Hodge in School Board Zone 5 was unopposed and will remain on the school board.

Randal "Bubba" Jones, Michael Anderson and Paul Johnson were all unopposed for road board.

Nancy Rainier and Collier Smith were voted in to fill two seats on the Murfreesboro City School Board, which they were appointed to by the City Council. Because of the latest census numbers, the city is no longer able to appoint members to fill out the remaining time for a vacant school board seat. They can now only fill the position until the next scheduled election.

In races for the state House...in the 34th District, Republican Rick Womick will face Democrat Luke Dickerson in November. Dickerson edged challenger Spencer Douglas by 94 votes. For new District 37, Republican Dawn White defeated challenger Richard Garvin 73-percent to 27-percent. White will face Bob New, who was unopposed in the Democratic primary. In the 49th state House district, incumbent Republican Mike Sparks and Democrat Mike Williams were both unopposed. In November, Womick will face Dickerson in the 34th District, White versus New and Sparks will be challenged by Williams. Joe Carr defeated Republican challenger Ryan Harring to retain his seat in the state House 48 district. There is no Democratic challenger.

In the 14th District state Senate race...Republican Jim Tracy defeated challenger Matt Randolph 86-percent to 14-percent to retain his position as there was no Democratic challenger.
