(MURFREESBORO)  Habitat for Humanity's 13th Annual Cooking To Build is now in the books, and coordinator Megan Hutchings is wearing an "ear to ear" smile. Patrons were giving praise that this was the best one ever!

Hutchings noted that proceeds from Cookin To Build will go toward helping low-income families have an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of owning a home.

She said, "We followed the CDC guidelines, took temperatures of the vendors, had signs everywhere promoting social distancing and wearing of face masks."

Temperatures on Saturday (11/7/2020) were in the low 70s, and the historic Rutherford County Courthouse renovation was completed. It made a perfect location for this annual event.

Executive Director Terri Shultz notes, "Habitat does not give houses away but instead helps families who earn 30-80 per cent of the area median income (AMI) buy a home through a low-interest mortgage, so they can build wealth equity and provide a better future for their family. Future Homeowners attend 30 hours of Financial Literacy and Homeowner Education and complete 300-400 hours of sweat equity. Habitat Homeowners are then equipped to sustain their home, manage their money and many move out of a cycle of poverty."

Sponsors for the 2020 Cookin To Build included Title Sponsor Nissan USA with  additional funding from Volunteer State Bank, Thompson Machinery/CAT, Redstone FCU, Atmos Energy, The Pottery Place, Knights of Columbus, Redeemer Classical Academy, Schneider Electric, Wilson Bank & Trust, Kroger, Heritage South, First Bank, Farmers Insurance and U.S. Bank.

Legacy Point Subdivision

Rutherford County Area Habitat for Humanity is building a 77-home sub-division called Legacy Pointe. The homes will be off Halls Hill Pike in the Twin Oak Drive area.

The first phase the new subdivision will include five homes with six scheduled later.

Rutherford County Area Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit, non-denominational Christian housing ministry, seeks to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope. This is done through building quality, affordable, sustainable homes while partnering alongside low-income, working families. Homes are built by RCHFH construction staff, partner families, and community volunteers.

After a home is completed, it is sold to the family at no profit with a zero interest loan.
