Plainview Elementary School set to open in August 2021

Map: Rough draft for one of two proposed school zones for Plainview.

A new school in Rutherford County will be open for the next school year. Plainview Elementary School near the Plainview Road and Sledge Road intersection is currently under construction in Christiana.

The new school that sits on 150-acres is costing just a little over $51-million. However, some money would likely be saved on transportation costs and even some utility connection and construction fees if the county moved forward with a second and third school on the same acreage.  Plans are on the drawing board for the possibility of a future middle and high school next to Plainview.

Looking back to 2019, the Rutherford County Commission approved $8-million to be spent on grading work to prepare the site for construction. The commission also gave the greenlight on spending $1.2 million for design work on the school which is set to open in August of 2021.

The Rutherford County Board of Education is hosting a public hearing on Thursday (Dec. 3, 2020) concerning rezoning for the new Plainview Elementary School. The zone changes will impact the Barfield, Buchanan, Christiana and Rockvale elementary schools. The meeting will be Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. in Barfield Elementary School on Veterans Parkway.

Two slightly different zone plans show that students living in the area East of Shelbyville Highway all the way to I-24 - and roughly between Joe B Jackson Parkway and just past Highway 269 in Christiana, would attend Plainview.
