(NASHVILLE) Twenty-one Middle Tennessee female students will make history at 6:00 o'clock Monday night (2/1/2021) in a virtual ceremony from the Grand Ole Opry House. The group, including several from Murfreesboro's troop 2019, are among the nation’s first female Eagle Scouts.
Local history was made on February 1, 2019 when BSA Troop 2019 was chartered at Trinity United Methodist Church here in Murfreesboro. Those young women were the first female students in Rutherford and Cannon Counties to form an Eagle Scout class. Monday night’s virtual ceremony marks their success after two-years of dedicated service.
WGNS is also very proud of these young women, because they have been serving this community by retiring Old Glory with dignity for listeners who bring tattered American flags to the radio station.
There is another local connection, Middle Tennessee State University is co-hosting the virtual ceremony. The university is in partnership with the council through a partnership that was signed in 2019.
Due to COVID-19 precautions, the Eagle Scouts will be projected via Zoom to the large video screen at the Grand Ole Opry House as leaders on the stage confer upon them Scouting’s highest rank.
Legendary Opry announcer Bill Cody, a member of the Middle Tennessee Council’s executive board, will host a virtual recognition of the first female Eagles from the stage of the Grand Ole Opry House. This will also will mark the second anniversary of when Boy Scouts of America allowed females to join its primary program, which is now known as Scouts BSA.
Statistics show that less than 6 per cent of scouts earn the level of Eagle Scouts, and it is a badge of honor that goes with them throughout their life. Last December, Lily Morse from California took her place in the history books as the first female BSA member to receive the rank of Eagle Scout.
Video from ceremony will on the council’s Facebook page, facebook.com/MTCBSA, at 6 p.m. Monday evening. It will be archived on its YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-3fsUFEJOl0pvoy8Vm9iNA, immediately following the ceremony.
