Rutherford County, TN—Murfreesboro’s 2021 Earth Day Celebration is going virtual this year, and the theme is #RestoreRutherford.

“This year marks the 20th anniversary of Murfreesboro’s Earth Day Celebration and Middle Tennessee Electric is proud to continue the tradition as primary sponsor and organizer of this annual event,” said MTE President/CEO Chris Jones.

The pre-recorded programming will air on Facebook at 12:00 p.m., Thurs., April 22 and on Rutherford County TV channel 19 (Comcast), Murfreesboro CityTV Channel 3 (Comcast), Roku, Apple TV and YouTube.

“Our community has much to gain by finding ways to #RestoreRutherford,” said County Mayor Bill Ketron. “We believe the fun and informative video has something for everyone, kids to adults. Please join us in learning new ways to restore our beautiful county.”

The event, sponsored by Middle Tennessee Electric, Rutherford County Government, and the City of Murfreesboro, has enlisted the help of several community partners to make this year’s unique event even more special. MTE has purchased and will be giving away a total of 300 redbud seedlings. Rutherford County Solid Waste, Murfreesboro Water Resources, and the Stones River Water Shed have provided reusable tote bags that can be used in place of plastic grocery bags. Other items have been included from community partners including but not limited to Middle Tennessee State University. These items can be picked up at three locations beginning April 22-April 30 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. while supplies last.

Pickup locations are Patterson Park Community Center, 521 Mercury Blvd, Murfreesboro; Smyrna Outdoor Adventure Center, 100 Sam Ridley Pkwy East, Smyrna; and the Wilderness Station at Barfield Crescent Park, 401 Volunteer Road, Murfreesboro.

Numerous environmental activities have been posted on the event’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/MurfreesboroEarthDay). Kids and adults alike are encouraged to “share your story” of how they are making an impact in their community by taking a picture of themselves completing one of the suggested activities and tagging the Earth Day page. Everyone can also join the conversation across all social media platforms by using the event hashtag “#RestoreRutherford.”

“It is our duty to preserve Rutherford’s beauty,” said Ketron. “We hope this year’s virtual event truly inspires you to do something special to do just that.”
