(MURFREESBORO) Monday (10/4/2021) around lunchtime may be as close as any of us will come to witnessing an Indiana Jones type doing a high-tech search of clues from the past.
Students from MTSU’s Geoscience Department, led by Dr. Joe Collins, will begin, and likely complete, the scanning of Evergreen Cemetery section M.
Oakland Mansion’s Executive Director James Manning said, “The equipment will reveal the earth that has been disturbed.”
After Dr. Collins and his colleagues analyze the finding, there should be an accurate accounting of the number and location of all the graves in section M.”
The scanning may not look exciting, but the information gained will be priceless. The equipment will reveal the earth that has been disturbed along with the number and location of all the graves in section M.
This is a part of Oakland Mansion’s on-going search to find and preserve the stories of the African-Americans who worked and lived on this massive 1,500-acre plantation in the 1800’s.
Part of the historic findings will be made known to future generations through the construction of a memorial.
Members of the African American Heritage Society of Rutherford County, Rutherford County Archeological Society and Oaklands Mansion Board of Trustees members have also been invited to observe.
NewsRadio WGNS will keep you informed on the findings and future research.
