Participants need to make sure they are prepared for the 13.1 mile trek. With health and safety in mind, Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford offered a few tips when getting ready for the run.

• Make sure you are well-hydrated prior to the start of the race. By drinking lots of water during the week, you can optimize your hydration before you hit the start line.

• It’s also important to eat a diet rich in complex carbohydrates, such as breads, pasta and rice. Be sure you have your hydration and food sources on hand for the race, including an electrolyte source. Nothing new on race day!

• Rest. Prioritize taking time to rest your muscles in preparation for the race.

• Wear a pair of shoes and clothes that you have worn during a few long runs. The last thing you want is to feel uncomfortable during your run.

The day before the race, plan your timeline for the following morning and review the map of the course. On Saturday morning, get up early and arrive at least an hour before the race.

After completing the race, remember to replenish carbohydrates and drink water with electrolytes. In addition, do lower-intensity cardiovascular movements after the race, like a short walk, and stretch gently.

If you are experiencing any unusual pain after the race, visit your primary care physician or one of Ascension Saint Thomas’ emergency care facilities.

More Murfreesboro Half Marathon Details:

On October 9, approximately 1500 runners from 26 different states will participate in the 14th Murfreesboro Half Marathon (“The Middle Half”). Starting near Central Magnet School on Main Street at 7:00 a.m., the runners will finish the 13.1 mile race near the historic downtown square.

Residents are encouraged to check out the course route and make alternate plans for travel between 6:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Streets will be opened as the last runner finishes on that section. To estimate the time, allow 15 minutes per mile. For example, the road at Mile 6 would open up at approximately 90 minutes after the race start. A map of the course may be found at www.themiddlehalf.com/course.

Participants may register online by credit or debit card at www.themiddlehalf.com until the cap of 1500 is reached.

“We are taking extra measures to ensure the safety of our participants,” said Nate Williams, Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation director. “After taking a break last year, the runners are eager to get back on our course.”

The course includes the Rutherford County Courthouse on the Square, scenic tree-lined Main Street and Maney Avenue, Oaklands Mansion and the newer portions of MTSU’s campus.

Presented by Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford, additional sponsors include The City of Murfreesboro, Murfreesboro Parks & Recreation Department, Fleet Feet Sports Murfreesboro, Purity, TrustPoint Hospital, Lee Company, Tifosi, Murfreesboro Water Resources, and Brass Horn Coffee Roasters.
